How Independiente del Valle Beat Gualaceo in Azogues

Both sides traded chances early at the Jorge Andrade Cantos stadium. For both clubs, opportunities to compete for silverware like this do not come often during the season.

Tempers flared just 12 minutes into the match.  As a result, Referee Augusto Aragón sent off Joaquín Papa for heated protests from the bench.

Therefore, Independiente del Valle had to manage the rest of the half without their coach on the touchline. Meanwhile Gualaceo pushed  forward looking for an opening.

However, the hosts could not turn their early pressure into a clear shot on goal. Eventually, the deadlock finally broke in the 29th minute through Reasco’s header.

Reasco Punishes a Goalkeeping Error

Reasco’s goal came from a sharp piece of opportunism. First, Mateo Carabajal drove into the box and forced a save from goalkeeper Wellington Peralta.

However, Peralta could only parry the shot back into danger. Immediately afterward, Reasco reacted first and headed the rebound into an empty net. The goal arrived against the run of general play. Nevertheless, it rewarded IDV’s sharpness in the box. As a result, Independiente del Valle carried a slim 1-0 lead into the break.

Gualaceo almost levelled things moments later. Jaime Coime struck a powerful effort that crashed against the crossbar. However, the scoreline stayed 1-0 at halftime despite Gualaceo’s late push.

Extra Men Forward, Extra Nerves at the Back

Independiente del Valle adjusted shape  after their coach’s red card. Meanwhile, the assistant staff pushed the wingers higher to stretch Gualaceo’s back line.

Meanwhile, Gualaceo searched for width to trouble a makeshift back four. Then, Angelo Mina tested goalkeeper Miguel Peralta with a low effort midway through the second half. However, Peralta stayed alert and smothered the danger. As a result, momentum continued to swing back and forth without either side taking full control.

In addition, both benches used substitutions to freshen tired legs. For a while, that balance held until Perelló’s decisive intervention arrived later in the game.

Perelló struck the decisive blow in the 67th minute. Ronald Briones slipped him through, and the forward finished with a clean right footed strike.

That goal made it 2-0 and closed out the tie. Independiente del Valle becomes the last team through to the Copa Ecuador’s semifinals. They will face Delfín SC, who eliminated Liga de Portoviejo 2-0 in the previous round. The semifinal will be played over two legs between October 6 and October 29.

Manta’s Jocay Stadium hosts the first leg, and the return leg moves to IDV’s Chillo Jijón complex. Meanwhile, Liga de Quito and defending champion Universidad Católica contest the other semifinal.

Liga de Quito advanced past rivals Aucas 1-0, while Universidad Católica beat Astillero FC by the same score.
