Cristiano Ronaldo reaches 980 goals as Al Nassr win

Cristiano Ronaldo returned to club football with a goal and another step towards a personal milestone. His opener helped Al Nassr beat Diriyah 3-0 on Friday, October 9.

Meanwhile, Portugal’s public congratulations added another layer to the night after his recent departure from the national squad. The finish took his career tally to 980, leaving twenty more to reach four figures.

Al Nassr punish Diriyah’s defensive weaknesses

Friday’s Saudi Pro League meeting belonged to the eighth round at Al Awwal Park in Riyadh. Al Nassr established a two goal advantage before halftime and completed the scoring after the break.

Ronaldo provided the first breakthrough, reacting quickly when the goalkeeper could not hold an effort from distance. However, the home side’s performance extended beyond their captain’s finish.

Samú Costa added a header from a corner, giving Diriyah another problem before the interval. Coman later finished a counterattack to remove any remaining doubt about the result.

Cristiano Ronaldo reacts first to the rebound

Kingsley Coman tested Waleed Abdullah with a left-footed shot in the 23rd minute. The goalkeeper saved the attempt but left a rebound inside the penalty area.

Ronaldo reached the loose ball and converted with his right foot. As a result, a save that initially protected Diriyah became the opening for Al Nassr.

His movement mattered because the shooting opportunity developed from a teammate’s attempt. Instead of stopping to watch, the striker stayed ready for the second ball.

Costa and Coman extend the advantage

João Félix delivered the corner for Costa’s 35th minute header. Meanwhile, the midfielder’s finish doubled the advantage and gave Al Nassr breathing room before halftime.

Coman then scored in the 77th minute after Sadio Mané supplied the counterattack. His low finish completed a night featuring contributions from several attacking players.

Moreover, the third goal punished the space Diriyah left while pursuing a response. Al Nassr could exploit that opening without needing another goal from their captain.

Goal count rises amid the title race

Ronaldo’s career tally now stands at 980 goals across club and international football. Therefore, the gap to 1,000 goals has narrowed to twenty.

Ecuadorian outlet El Universo also reported that Al Nassr moved level on points with Al Qadsiah. However, matching a rival’s points total does not automatically establish sole leadership. Friday’s victory took Al Nassr to 19 points, keeping the league contest competitive.

Portugal’s congratulations leave broader questions open

Cristiano Ronaldo also received recognition from the Portugal national team’s official social account after scoring. The message highlighted his goal without addressing the recent disagreement involving Jorge Jesus.

However, acknowledging a club performance does not confirm an agreement over international selection. His departure from camp and future role remain separate subjects.
