Juan Brunetta’s brace lifts Tigres past Toluca

Juan Brunetta gave the Volcán a night worth celebrating with two goals against the league leaders. Tigres beat Toluca 3-2 on Friday, October 9, reviving their push towards the playoffs.

However, the victory demanded another response after the visitors erased a two goal deficit. Guillermo Martínez also scored as Víctor Manuel Vucetich’s side collected three points, while Toluca surrendered first place in the standings.

Tigres vs Toluca brings a needed home response

Matchday 11 brought a demanding test to Estadio Universitario after the international break. Tigres entered with ten points and little room to waste another home opportunity.

Meanwhile, Antonio Mohamed’s visitors arrived at the summit with a stronger campaign behind them. Their status made this an examination of Vucetich’s attack against serious opposition. Instead of waiting, the hosts pushed forward immediately and forced Luis García into early work. Emiliano Gómez offered an outlet, while Brunetta looked for shooting positions around the penalty area.

Moreover, the Argentine already carried much of his team’s attacking responsibility. The club’s match preview credited him with four goals and four assists before kickoff.

A rebound and Gómez’s cross build the advantage

Brunetta opened the scoring in the sixth minute, reacting to a loose ball inside the area. His first-time finish went through García’s legs.

Later, Gómez attacked down the left and delivered towards the far post. Martínez met the cross with his left foot to double the lead.

In addition, the finish marked Martínez’s first official goal for Tigres. Paulinho then struck in the 42nd minute, keeping Toluca within one goal at halftime.

Juan Brunetta answers Viñas with the winning finish

Federico Viñas joined the attack after halftime and equalised in the 54th minute. The striker turned inside the area and beat Nahuel Guzmán with a finish.

However, parity lasted only six minutes. Fernando Gorriarán collected a rebound outside the area and found Brunetta in space. Another first-time shot slipped through García’s legs and restored the home lead. As a result, Toluca’s comeback immediately became another chase, with half an hour still remaining.

Thirteen points revive the playoff chase

The result lifted Tigres to 13 points and provisional eleventh place in the Apertura 2026. It also followed their 1-0 victory over Puebla, giving Vucetich consecutive league wins.

Meanwhile, Toluca remained on 20 points but dropped behind América on goal difference. Their defeat changed the leadership picture before the remaining weekend matches. Therefore, Tigres improved their Liguilla prospects without securing qualification. One productive evening leaves work ahead in the Liga MX run in.

Sharp finishing needs Guzmán’s protection

Juan Brunetta supplied the decisive touches, but Tigres also needed their goalkeeper to protect the result. Guzmán denied Paulinho before halftime and stopped Jesús Angulo’s late effort.

Moreover, the hosts cleared another Viñas attempt near the goal line. Those interventions explain why attacking efficiency alone did not settle the match.Toluca continued searching for openings through the closing stages. Nevertheless, Tigres survived that pressure and avoided surrendering their lead again.
