Independiente del Valle Wins Supercopa Ecuador After Beating Universidad Católica 3-0

Independiente del Valle Wins

Independiente IDV just secured the Supercopa  and they really turned it on in the second half. It wasn’t the quickest start against Universidad Católica but the Sangolquí side eventually found their rhythm and took total control after Sornoza  got things moving followed by a clinical finish from Carabajal to double the lead. To cap it all off Ronald Briones stepped up late to hammer home the 3 and final goal. Between those sharp set pieces and their late game energy they were simply too much to handle.

IDV Take Control After a Difficult Start

Universidad Católica began with more confidence. The Quito side moved the ball well in the opening minutes and pushed Independiente del Valle back into its own half.

That early pressure created problems for IDV. The build-up looked rushed and several passes failed to find their target. Even so the defense stayed calm enough to survive the first wave. José Fajardo had one of Católica’s clearest chances. However Aldair Quintana responded well in goal and kept the match level when his team needed him most.

Sornoza Opens the Scoring

In the 24th minute the game took a different turn. After a play within the penalty area Carlos González struck the post and Junior Sornoza grabbed the rebound. Sornoza responded promptly. At the Gonzalo Pozo Ripalda stadium he finished with poise and gave Independiente del Valle a (1-0) lead. After the goal settled IDV the team started to play more confidently and appeared more dangerous during transitions.

Carabajal Doubles the Lead from a Corner

6 minutes later IDV struck again. This time, the damage came from a set piece. Mateo Carabajal found a pocket of space inside the box and met the corner with a clinical header and suddenly it was (2-0).

For Católica it felt like a mountain to climb. The scoreline didn’t really tell the whole story though Católica had plenty of the ball but IDV was just more ruthless when it mattered.

Briones Seals the Title Late On

Universidad Católica kept pushing after the break. The team looked for a way back into the match and tried to force errors in the final third.

Still the finishing touch never arrived. IDV defended the box with discipline and waited for the right moment to finish the contest. Ronald Briones delivered that final blow near the end of the match. His goal made it (3-0) and confirmed Independiente del Valle as Supercopa Ecuador champion.
