Mexico vs Chile: Márquez Falls 2-0

Mexico vs Chile ended in boos at the Memorial Coliseum. Rafael Márquez still waits for his first win as national team coach. Chile scored twice and rarely suffered.

Therefore, Mexico’s debut run now stands at four winless matches, a low not seen since 1960. Meanwhile, the road to the 2030 World Cup already feels heavy.

Mexico vs Chile Result: Another Winless Night for Márquez

Chile won 2-0 on Californian soil, and Mexico never found an answer. Márquez missed Hirving Lozano, Gilberto Mora, Luis Romo, and Mateo Chávez.

Romo’s absence, in particular, left midfield without its natural anchor. As a result, Márquez relied on what remained in the squad. Moreover, goalkeeper Padilla made his debut and conceded twice. This result also closed Márquez’s debut tour, according to AS México. Overall, it felt like a FIFA World Cup hangover for El Tri. Chile, in contrast, played with clarity and patience.

Ignacio Trelles endured the last comparable start in 1960. However, results drive every sporting process, whether it is interim or long term. Consequently, scrutiny of Márquez’s squad selections grows quickly.

Gutiérrez Breaks the Deadlock Through Padilla's Legs

Mexico set a fast, fearless rhythm until the hydration break. Gallardo forced a catlike reaction from Vigouroux with a straight shot. Then Alvarado fired a left-footed rocket, and Vigouroux flew across like a young Memo Ochoa.

Gutiérrez then warned Padilla with a curled right-footed shot after combining with Dagoberto Espinoza. However, Mexico could not turn that pressure into a goal. After halftime, a left-footed strike from Tapia jolted Mexico awake. Obed and Fidalgo then fired at Vigouroux, who held firm. Also, Everardo López came close to his first national team goal.

Maximiliano Gutiérrez, however, showed no mercy. His right-footed shot, struck with the tip of the boot, slipped between Padilla’s legs. Tapia and Vidal combined to set up the goal. As a result, Mexico never recovered from that blow.

Mexico Pushes Early, but Chile Sets the Tempo

Lira’s misjudgement opened the match with chaos, and Padilla answered with a long Hail Mary. As a result, Mexico played direct football early, and the rhythm came in bursts.

Still, Lira stood out for Mexico. Berterame also shifted gears before halftime, yet he ran out of space. Lira’s precise chip then closed the half, but the header drifted astray.

Vigouroux made the night’s best saves, so Chile stayed calm under pressure. Vidal also brought composure to midfield. In addition, Tapia and Pizarro tried shots from distance and watched Gutiérrez’s runs. Mexico, however, lost steam in midfield. Pizarro won the ball back, and Osorio waited before choosing the pass. Then Pizarro finished with a gentle touch for the second goal. Padilla stayed a spectator.

Match Timeline and Fallout for Márquez's Side

Mexico vs Chile opened at a lively pace, but Chile survived the first half without conceding. After halftime, however, Gutiérrez’s goal changed the mood completely.

Referee Filip Dujic, meanwhile, let a possible handball by Everardo López pass without punishment. Six added minutes then ended in boos. In summary, the Chile 2-0 Mexico scoreline came from goals by Gutiérrez and Pizarro. Chile also beat Mexico in California in 2016, so this venue revived bad memories.
