Santos vs Flamengo ends level after Neymar’s penalty brace

Neymar came off the bench and dragged Santos back into the match. Two late penalties turned Flamengo’s comfortable advantage into a frustrating draw.

Santos vs Flamengo finished 2-2 at Vila Belmiro on Thursday, October 8, during the championship’s 29th round. Flamengo kept the league lead, but Santos made them pay for mistakes inside their own penalty area.

Flamengo builds a lead before halftime

Danilo broke the deadlock in the 43rd minute after combining with Pedro. His low finish rewarded a run into the box from deep.

Soon afterwards, Lucas Paquetá headed home from Jorge Carrascal’s delivery following a short corner. Flamengo carried a two goal advantage into the dressing room.

Diógenes had already kept Santos alive with saves during the visitors’ strongest spell. However, his teammates struggled to stop Flamengo finding space around their penalty area.

Neymar gives Cuca an attacking option

Cuca replaced Philippe Coutinho with Neymar at halftime and also introduced Rony. Together, those changes gave Santos fresh options around Flamengo’s defensive midfielders.

Nevertheless, Neymar’s arrival did not produce an immediate goal or sustained control. Santos still needed to work their way into dangerous positions.

Gabriel Bontempo later struck the crossbar, and Gabriel Barbosa tested Agustín Rossi from the rebound. That sequence brought the home side closer to a breakthrough.

Jorginho’s handball changes the balance

Rony pressured Jorginho near the penalty area, and the midfielder handled the ball. Initially, referee Anderson Daronco awarded a free kick outside the box.

Isso é um absurdo. Foi muita falta do Rony em cima do Jorginho. Que penalti bizarro que deram. Flamengo foi assaltado. https://t.co/nsTH6p1I8H

However, a lengthy VAR review changed the decision to a penalty. Jorginho also received a red card, leaving Flamengo to defend with ten players. Neymar converted, and Santos suddenly had a route back into the contest. More importantly, Flamengo had lost a midfielder who helped protect their defence.

The visitors needed to manage possession carefully after that setback. Instead, another foul inside the area gave Neymar a second opportunity.

Santos vs Flamengo tightens the title race

Luiz Araújo fouled Gabriel Barbosa inside the box, conceding the second penalty. Once again, Neymar finished cleanly and brought Santos level.

The Neymar brace helped Peixe reach 42 points and maintain their Libertadores ambitions. Meanwhile, Flamengo moved to 61 points, just one ahead of Palmeiras.

Santos vs Flamengo left the leaders with two points slipping away. As a result, their narrow advantage leaves little room for further mistakes.

Santos, however, earned a result that reflected their persistence after the break. Neither side won, despite the home crowd’s relief at the final whistle.

Composure turns pressure into a point

Santos kept contesting loose balls and forced Flamengo to defend difficult situations. Rony’s pressure helped create the first penalty incident rather than allowing a comfortable clearance.

Moreover, Neymar delivered when both opportunities demanded a calm finish. Those conversions made the difference between an encouraging response and a point.

Flamengo’s official match report confirms the two penalties decided the comeback. Still, Santos needed goalkeeper interventions earlier to remain within reach.

Plata features as Flamengo looks ahead

Gonzalo Plata entered around the 70th minute, replacing Carrascal on the right. Meanwhile, fellow Ecuadorian Anthony Valencia appeared among Flamengo’s substitutes. AS México’s match coverage records the substitution.

Earlier reporting from PRIMICIAS covered concerns about his fitness before the international break. However, Flamengo’s immediate task is to correct the decisions that conceded both penalties. Coach Leonardo Jardim acknowledged his team’s errors afterwards.

The Brasileirão 2026 schedule next sends Flamengo into a derby against Fluminense. Santos, meanwhile, faces Atlético MG as both clubs continue chasing their targets.
